Sadie

Well, I finally wrote my entire post--thoughts, feelings, emotions, and tears.  I re-capped what happened that Thursday, over month ago.

And then it didn't save.

So, I have what's left, and I don't feel like writing it again right now…maybe later.

Today Sadie would have been 8.

****

Because before Brooke and before Brad and before Holly before Joe there with Sadie.

For some reason, I didn't think it would be this hard to get over a dog.  For now I'll blame it on my pregnancy hormones, since that excuse won't be valid much longer.. Growing up we lost hamsters cats and say goodbye to dogs. Heartbroken over beloved family pet Bacca, to this day still remains the best well-behaved dog I ever had...

But we grew up and we moved on I went to college there were other dogs.  Then there was Sadie.

Perhaps it was because she was so naughty. Maybe it was because she needed so much attention. Or maybe it was because I found her in a moment in my life where nothing seemed right and she filled everything that I needed in that time and I think her I forever tried to give her the best life possible.

I even remember Joe picking me up the first time, I wouldn't let him inside!! I knew how she loved to jump on people and was so naughty, I didn't want to scare him off haha!  Well that didn't happen.  He fell in love with both of us.

We became a family.

With her crazy seizures and her licking of the air, we were always trying ways to make her life better.  That included this crazy wrap jacket thing.  #didntwork

While I don't expect the tears to dry, i'm hoping that this kind of closes a chapter so remains open and unsaid. I've put off writing this simply because I didn't want to cry, and yet almost on a daily basis I find myself tearing up.

I know it's not just me as the tears well up in my husband's eyes, whenever I ask him if it's going to get easier…

I also know when I look at my little dog Holly and how she's still not the same. Sadie was all she ever knew, and although Sadie seems more annoyed than anything that was Holly's pack and now she's one.

We used to joke about how much easier it would be to keep up with the cleaning without all the fur.   I will trade fur for cleaner floors any day. Every time I dry clothes in the dryer there would always still be tons of fur.  Well I can tell you now when I fold black pants, the pieces of fur are far and few.

I will also say, once again I have a love/hate relationship with Time Hop.

So, yes, today you would have been 8 Sadie.  I miss you every day and think about you all of the time. I hope you have all the bacon you want in heaven, and get to run around free.  Love you Sadie Lady!

Wednesday Randoms

Happy Hump day!!  I am not just grateful during the month of November, but the whole "Giving Thanks" notion certainly gets my gears turning.  I have a cheesy paper  sign above our sliding glass doors, that just stops me every time I see it.  I really want to instill that in our children all year long; I want them to appreciate all that they have all year long.

I'm not going to lie, losing Sadie has put a bit of a damper on my holiday spirit.  I swear I think of her all day long; you don't realize how much a dog really depends on you for everything, especially a special needs dog.  I have to really think about how she doesn't need her meds, or to be let in from outside, or that I had to call and cancel her pawdicure/grooming for next week and politely ask them to take me off the list to call every 8 weeks. I try to not dwell on it, but I know it is healthy to feel it all, and talk about it, so I do, and I will.   I will also continue to focus on all that is great and good in our lives, and for that I am grateful.  I also know we gave Sadie girl a really good life for the time we did have her.

I broke down and bought this album too. I usually never buy music, but I needed some pep in my life. Brooke and I love having the official "Shake it off" dance party and helllllerrrrrrr.  Have you seen/heard the Blank Space video?? #needed  She's all out cray cray, and I love it. Thanks Tay.

Ya know, in case you needed proof I'm like a 13 year old girl.

PS. Do yourself and favor and don't buy these.  OMG. I saw them in the organic section of the grocery store and somehow they just jumped right into my cart.  I usually can control myself, but no.  Not with these scrumptious bites of peppermint heaven!

I saw one of the Advo leaders post this you tube video about a book coming out.  Being a former dancer, I have always been fascinated with anything ballet related.  The art of dance is intense, dramatic, and you have to have a lot of dedication to make it in the world of ballet.  Hearing her story made me want to see what the book was about...

I put it on hold at our library and holy cow.  I started it yesterday and I have already devoured 100 pages. Granted, it's a YA novel, but still.  It really makes me realize how petty my problems can be and how far you can really take life, if you just never.give.up.  She experiences loss, pain, and so many issues right from the start. I cannot wait to see where this goes.  I also appreciate a happy ending.

So, other than it going from 70 yesterday, down to 41 {feels like 28}, us finding Brooke a big girl bed {will be here Nov. 28th!}, a real live official girls' night tonight {yayyy Matty!} and a massage tomorrow--omg vacation for mama--  that is all for now! I hope you are staying warm, loving life, and enjoying small moments.

PS. Hubbers in hunting.  Please get a deer.   Ok bye friends!!!

Pregnancy Brain? {and a missing dog}

So, if you've been following my lil old blog here for awhile, you know it's nothing new that our dogs are naughty.

Not just a here or there type of thing, I'm talking flat out---BAD DOGS.   And I still love them.  Our dogs require a lot of special attention; you may remember that time they failed an interview---here  Or the day I thought Holly went missing--here.

Sadie and her countless number of seizures and our attempts to keep her alive, healthy and well.  She is currently doing wonderful in that department, with the help of two very powerful drugs, she hasn't had a single seizure since I thought we were to lose her last November.  That post, here   [Thank the Lord.]

Monday night however, my dear old Sadie Lady, ran away.

I know, looks harmless, right?  Despite licking the air incessantly, stealing all and any food left on a counter {this summer it has been a raw sweet potato, cooked chicken patty and 11 (yes eleven) Cinnamon muffins}.  #countersurfer

She enjoys lots of toddler scraps, and I'm with her all.day.long.  I cannot imagine why she would wanna leave us?  Doesn't she know, we give her a better home than anyone possibly could?

All in all, Monday, as I began cooking dinner around 8pm, I left the sliding glass door open, just big enough so that Holly could run in/out.  She has this annoying habit of wanting to do so while I make breakfast or dinner, so lately I just leave it open.

MY BAD.  #whatwasithinking #pregobrain

About an hour later, as I ran around the living room picking up all of Brooke's toys and straightening up before Joe got home, I realized how SILENT my house was.  No licking of the air.  No dog under my feet.  Nothing.

I looked downstairs.  I looked upstairs. I checked the dog run.   Gone.  It was nearing the time Joe would be pulling into the driveway, and so I calmly called him and began to explain Sadie was gone.

To say he was a little upset, was understatement. He couldn't figure out how I let a 70 pound dog "just slip away" without me noticing.   Truth?  I don't know either.  I don't even know if she ran out the garage when I took the garbage out or if she did in fact squeeze through the crack I had open in the sliding door for Holly.  Either way, she was gone.

He hopped out of his car and grabbed my truck keys…only to find out I was on Empty.  My gas light literally just came on earlier and I planned on getting gas at BJ's before my Tuesday Chiropractor appointment.

Yeah, that annoying gas is low-- dinging just made things worse and for the next two hours, Joe drove around looking for her.

He told me to get a hold of a girl on his Facebook who rescues dogs and she was really helpful.  She and a few others actually came and looked for Sadie.  Meanwhile, she said if a dog is missing, you must do the following: [and I did]

1.  Call 911 and leave your name/number and description of the dog in case someone grabs her.
2.  Put out a blanket, dog bed, and toys.
3.  Leave front and back lights on.
4.  Place an article of clothing that the owner had worn that day too.
5.  Cook up her favorite food and place it outside.

So after cooking bacon and putting all this stuff outside, Joe came home and went up to bed at 11.  I went out on a little walk, I mean how far could I actually go, this late and prego?  But I just didn't know what to do.  Neither of us ate dinner and it was honestly just a terrible night.  At 11:30 I wrote a craiglist ad, prompted by Joe's friend, and she posted on the local rescue Facebook page.

Just as the tears started flowing and I didn't think I'd get any sleep that night, a frantic lady called and asked if I was missing a dog…

Sadie had jumped into her pool and was swimming!  She was kind of a good distance away, but she had been gone for a few hours.  When I got there to get her, she was all fired up---not nervous at all.

What Ma? I just wanted to partake in a triathlon...

You see, Sadie has always loved to run.  Since the first few days I had her, she would try to run off.  It's just in her, to want to run away.  I don't know why, since we take pretty darn good care of her!

Last year she got out in the day time and the neighborhood boys caught her.  I can't tell you how many times Joe has ran after this dog, especially in his work clothes.

I don't believe she would have come back on her own; she is just not that kind of dog.  I don't want to think about what would have happened if that lady had already been in bed sleeping; there's no way Sadie could get out of the pool by herself.  I also worried about her not getting her very important medicine so that she stays seizure free.

I don't know why all of this happened, but I do know that this dog reminds me SO much of Marley and Me, time and time again.

I also know that I will NOT leave the door open, not even just a crack.  I have been having sort of an "off week" and just doing dumb things, so is it really just pregnancy brain?  Is that a real thing?  What do you mamas do that you normally don't, while carrying a babe??  Like Joe said, I am usually "Sharp as a tack" and for whatever reason, I dropped the ball(s) this week.  Ooopsies.  I am just happy everything turned out well in the end.

Well, except that tiny scratch on my Yukon's driver's side mirror…damn post office box.  :/  I swear I and a GOOD driver!! Oy

The Day our Dogs Failed an Interview

Last Friday Holly and Sadie had an interview.  Ya heard correctly.  An interview.  There is a kennel not too far from here that everyone raves about. The dogs are free to run around in a room/outdoor pen with other dogs during the day. It's like  a day camp for dogs.  However, the dogs need to get along and pass the interview.

Now mind you, I know our dogs; I know our dogs VERY well. I love them dearly, but sometimes they can be rather high maintenance. And while running around with other dogs is great in theory, I just knew it wasn't in the cards for our pups.

I got there and realized I hand't filled out the damn applications, so that took some time.  Meanwhile, Holly got kind of nervous and pooped right there on the floor.  I stepped in it since I was busy filling out the forms, and the girl didn't say anything until I realized what happened.

Awesome.

I had to put new collars on them that "breakaway"…[luckily I did not have to pay for them]

The dogs get separated small is under 35 pounds and large is over.

Sadie did okay; they introduce dogs one at a time and her hair stood up and then went down.  She walked around and was like "whatever".  No biggie.

Holly on the hand, is just a freakshow.  I thought she would be aggressive or naughty, but she was actually so so nervous.  She paced back and forth and ran laps…it was not good.  She got the other dogs wound up, but never settled down.

Sorry I failed mama!!

They took her out and back in again on a leash, but she still was not happy.  Since they're all animal behavior specialists, they don't like the dogs getting stressed out etc.  So they said we could try again another day, but in so many words, our dog failed the interview.

They then proceeded to let me know that Sadie was licking the ear of another dog: a German Shepherd.  I sheepishly smiled and said, "No, I am sure she was licking the AIR next to the other dog." You know, because it's normal for dogs to lick the air. Incessantly. Not kidding.

"You're kidding me with that place, right?!"

The lady gave me a weird look and I just tried to get out of there as fast as I possibly could.

I was supposed to drop them off for the day and then go get my skin consultation done by Joe's cousin Mary at this beautiful little European-like spa.

Instead I had to call and reschedule {explaining my fabulous morning} and they got quite a kick out of it!!  I brought the dogs home and counted down the minutes until 4:00.

I LOVED Waterlily.  It was so nice to learn about some anti-aging processes and newer skin care lines. I was so relaxed and happy…{the goodies I bought are an entire different blog post!}

Only to come home to find out little miss Brooke gave Dada a run for his money! They went to the mall and walked around; and she pooped. Normally not a big deal, but Dada doesn't deal well with poo and he didn't bring the diaper bag. {I know, right?!}

So he got her home and by that time it was all over her diaper and she must have eaten something that didn't agree because it was the third time that day and not quite normal.  All I know is that her clothes were in the tub, poo everywhere and she was running around buck naked.

She then proceeded to dump the dog water all over the floor.

I may have ended the day with a glass of Pinot or two  and started really counting down the days until St. Martin.  It's all funny looking back on it, but seriously?! What a day.

Gotta love life with animals and kids!!

Needless to say, I will be boarding our dogs at our traditional kennel (which they love and do well at) and I will stay out longer than 2 hours next time…so that all is cleaned up and well when I get home! LOL

Happy Birthday Sadie!

Today our Sadie turns 7.  A few weeks ago, I didn't think she would make it...but she did, and we are sooooo happy to have her here!!  I thought I'd re-cap a little bit about her today...

Sadie

I picked a name that I loved, "Sadie" {I loved that it meant princess!] and kept my eyes peeled for a female dog on our local animal shelter.  On Father's Day 2007, I "just wanted to go look" and I fell in love with her then.  A beautiful yellow lab mix, with her paw playfully poking out of the kennel---She was 6 months old; she was just a puppy! I wanted a quiet, older dog who just needed someone to love her.  "Maggie" {what they named her} was playful, energetic, and just a great dog.  Ok, so she was rather naughty at times, chewed things, had accidents, and didn't really "graduate" either of her puppy training classes.  But she was mine, and I was hers.  She got me through a few tough months [owning and living in my own home, bad relationship had finally ended, parents' divorce turned ugly, switched my graduate degree plan....huge life changes people!]  I have fond memories of getting my skinny on, by running the streets with her; trying so hard to just tire her out!! We'd make up for it by eating cinnamon buns and watching movies like Freedom Writers on Friday nights; nights where all my coupled friends had hot dates, or fun plans, and me?  I had Sadie.

I knew Joe must have really loved me when he accepted me and Sadie into his home.  Apparently he never allowed dogs over at his house [neat freak] and didn't want to deal with the mess.  Well, we started dating in January, he took me away on a cruise in February, and on the cruise, he had his parents watch MY dog!  I hadn't even met them, and here they were offering to take care of Sadie.  By the end of February and beginning of March, I came to Joe's only to discover he had bought Sadie a crate.  Knowing her naughty tendencies, he wanted a safe place for her to be kept while we were away, and so that I didn't have to run back and forth between my house and his.  Long and short?  We moved in together.  All 3 of us.   I think back to when Joe and Sadie first met; it was so funny because she had this huge milk jug rope toy that she was run around with and then bam! Drop it right on his foot.

The Runner
I cannot tell you how many times Joe would have to run after Sadie.  See, I understood she needed a leash.  I tried a few times when I first got her to practice, sit, stay, come.  Yeah, well the first chance she gets, she runs.  I remember I was in my flannel VS pjs and Uggs, and somehow she slipped through the door or off the leash, and I somehow found her a few streets over, in the backyard of someone's house. Luckily they shut the gate and heard me yelling!   As for Joe?  He tested her time, and time again.  One of the first night's that I spent here, he went to let her out, and she ended up going over to the neighbor's house and he was running around in the winter looking for her!

He did have her trained at one point to sit and stay in the backyard while he ironed his work clothes and made breakfast---this was back in the day when I was teaching; before we were even engaged!

But I kid you not, I can't tell you how many times he's called me when I was at work saying, "Sadie ran away!" I worked 45 minutes away; what he wanted me to do, I am not quite sure!!

She still licks the air, but we will take that over her crazy seizures any day.  She is really great with Brooke and Holly is simply lost without her.

Happy Birthday girl; here's to many more!!

Some throwbacks...

Many moons ago---we no longer have that carpet!!

It's the Holiday Season

How is it December 10th?! I cannot believe it.  I am so happy to report that our house is MUCH happier, healthier, calmer and so much better this week....Sadie girl is doing well and is more like our puppers every day!! Thank you again for all the prayers and well wishes.  I believe they worked!

Our little Christmas miracle.

Joe had the weekend off and it was a tad stressful [with the dog] but we made the most of it and enjoyed our time!  Friday we went to his grandma's house to "help"make some Italian cookies.  I didn't bring the pack-and-play {stupid}and so she was rather difficult to entertain and try to help bake.  It was so nice to see his family and spend some time there.  I was a rather stressed from Sadie and worrying about her, so I do hope to get some more cookie baking enjoyment in!

An Italian lunch...

Grandma feeding the babe....look at her belly!!

A *fraction* of the cookies made!

Great-grandma & Brooke {and Holly's sister Roxy!}

Saturday was kind of a "catch up" day.  Cleaning, laundry, {mostly towels} and taking care of the dog.   However, we snuck out for sushi and saw a movie---thank you Alison for babysitting!!--- I just love love love getting all dolled up!! I don't really wear super pretty and nice stuff when caring for Brooke all day.  I'm mostly covered in slobbery and food bits.  Our dogs shed a ton of fur and heels just aren't manageable with an 11 month old!! I really wanted to wear my new lace top from Express.  I paired it with a black cami, black skirt [from Urban Outfitters--never worn! I bought it right before we got pregnant!] black tights and my Aldo boots. I. Felt. Like. A. Million. Bucks.

Debating on how to wear this....

It was cold. Threw on a faux fur vest.

---As for the movie--OMG if you haven't seen Hunger Games 2--Catching Fire, you have got to do yourself a favor and go see it!  We really enjoyed the first one, but we were at home and watched it.  I believe it was the summer time and I was prego.  This time seeing it on the big screen was so amazing!! Joe and I couldn't believe that it was over when it was.  A great release away from our hectic and crazy [seizure dog] week.

Sunday we got up early and grabbed Panera breakfast sandwiches and headed to the Public Market to look for a tree.  None were big enough, but we did get a wreathe.  We headed back to our trusty tree place and found a winner!

My fur babies!

Doesn't it look like Sadie smiled?

We couldn't watch the game on cable, so we had the NFL Redzone on and the game pulled up on the internet!

My perfect Sunday Eve.

We enjoyed a cozy fire, decorating the tree, a Niners win, and delicious venison steaks on the grill.

Oh the holidays, you can't beat home, sweet home!!

Sadie Lady

What do you do when you're so upset, but there's nothing to make you stop hurting because you can't help a loved one that's hurting?  It's been a very long time since I've been sad like this.  I normally keep things upbeat, but I'm human.  I am a caretaker; I love my home and the beings in this house, and when one is not right, nothing seems right.

So I write. And I will write.  Because all of it has to come out, otherwise it festers inside me and it hurts even more.  I don't write for anyone but me; my own happiness.  We've all experienced pain, but you forget how much it really hurts, until you are going through it, once again.

I have so much I want to say, and yet my heart and mind have simply not been in the right place.  I want to share our untraditional Thanksgiving and will...but right now I just keep hoping my Sadie girl is okay.  She was diagnosed with epilepsy about 4 years ago, after a random bout of seizures one Sunday in March.  We've had her on phenobarbital, 1 pill, 2x a day.  We were very aware of any environmental factors that may trigger seizures; we switched to an organic dog food and treats; no more house sprays, no plug-ins, no more shampooing carpets, no pesticide/lawn chemicals, etc.  With the medicine, it seemed to have helped us control the seizures somewhat.  In the last two years, she would have a few seizures every 4-6 months or so.  It was routine, to the point, and I'd been through enough of them, that it wasn't a huge deal for me to help her through them. I stayed calm, grabbed towels, sat with her until it was over, and offered a Frosty Paw when as she recovered.

Friday morning [11.29] as I made Brooke a bottle, poured myself some Spark, ironed Joe's work clothes...I realized I didn't hear her whining.  While it isn't what some, nor myself would call music to my ears, it was to me, part of our morning routine.  We keep her crated at night, in case she has a seizure.  She's had accidents on our carpet, or even worse, had a seizure on our stairs--landing--and almost fell down.  So she seems to be okay and almost prefer the crate for sleep, but you bet as soon as she hears ya, or sees the sun, it's time to come out and eat breakfast!  So, as I started breakfast, I ran down to get her, and usually when I unlatch the door, she comes barreling out.  Not this time, she just kind of sat there and I saw that she had saliva crusted on the side of her face...which only meant one thing: she had a seizure.  I brought her upstairs, she was kind of out of it, and Holly gets so excited, she jumps all around and play-growls.  I let her outside, fed her breakfast, gave her her pill and she seemed okay.  I stepped out for a bit while my MIL was here, and when I came home she said Sadie had one seizure around 2.  I felt bad she had to witness it, and deal with the mess, but I am glad she was here to take care of her.

Sadie still seemed okay and not too bad, but just when Joe walked through the door around 6:30, she had another seizure....and it's been all down hill from there.  After this one, she was really out of it.  I brought her outside for fresh air, but didn't want to leave her out long  I brought her down to her crate, hoping it would calm her and let her relax; but that didn't happen. She kept walking around inside of it, and bumping her nose in the corners.  Within minutes of being in there, her jaw got stuck around the crate and she started wailing; I was crying and it was awful.  I got her to calm down, and have a little doggy ice cream and I really thought she'd be okay.  We kept checking on her and she was resting, but around 11:30 I heard her having another one.  She came out of it quickly and seemed alright so I went back up to bed.  I didn't hear any more, and tried to sleep.  I got up Saturday hoping she'd be totally done with them and ready for the day...but again, she didn't want to come out of the crate.  Didn't really want breakfast.  And would't take her pill.

It was a very, very, very long Saturday.

It was about every 3 hours, then 2, then down to 1 hour between her seizures.  I had her locked in the kitchen with me, so I could keep a good eye on her, but this time was just so different.  She never acted like this before; she'd stand in corners and just lay all lethargic-like and then go into another seizure.  I was emotionally exhausted by the time Joe got home; and once he saw how bad she was getting, he too knew we had to do something more.

Why didn't we call the Dr sooner?  We've dealt with her having cluster seizures before; there were some she'd have 5 bang, bang, bang, within an hour...but they'd stop.  I just kept wishing that they'd stop.  She'd never go longer than a day.  That's what concerned my husband.   So at 8:30, I called the ER vet and they of course said to bring her in.

We got there around 9:15 [her last seizure had been at 8:30] after talking with the Vets, they suggested monitoring her overnight, and giving her different med to help.  We agreed that'd be best, as they were getting very hard to manage at home, and I really didn't want her to have any more without professionals.  We left around 10:00 and she hadn't had one while we were there.

We called first thing this morning [12.1] and Joe talked to the Doctor.  He said she did have 4 more seizures and that he strongly suggest we keep her there throughout the day so they could take care of her.  The medicine needs time to work and the best thing to do is wait until tomorrow [Monday] morning.  At that point, if there's no improvement and nothing is working, we will talk about her quality of life...

...

So we picked her up this morning and she's resting in the back, by the washer and dryer.  I am hoping for a miraculous recovery, but you just don't know.  Her poor body has been so though so much, I'm not sure how she'll pull through.  But, she is an amazing doggie who has gone through a lot, so maybe she will bounce back.  I don't like that she hasn't eaten anything since Saturday morning when I fed her.  I also don't love how much medication she is on...so I will be monitoring her closely for the next few hours/day and hoping for some positive changes.

I know it's the beginning of December and I should be super excited and happy with all of the fun and exciting festive things taking place, but my heart is heavy and right now, Sadie is on my mind.

Positive thoughts are always welcome; I just don't want her suffering.

Wednesday Happenings...

12.12.12
What a fun little date.
I'll just share some random happenings...
Monday night my fabulous mother-in-law and I created this!
I e-mailed her a tutorial,
she printed it off.
I read it to her,
picked my fabrics,
and voila.
She sewed up this little diaper changing pad, with a pocket!
We used PUL material on one side (pink)
and adorable cotton fabric on the other.
There's enough room for a diaper and some wipes.
Great for on the go!
 We added velcro,
so that it can fold up and stay like a clutch.
I'm getting really uncomfortable
and I'm at my wits end with my doggies.
Thank you for your sweet comments about Holly.
The vet seems to think she has a bladder infection...
coincidentally with the trauma she endured?
I don't really buy it, but hopefully the meds will help her.
She's having accidents in the house,
and let's just say, it's not a fun way to start the morning.
So...
I'm really trying to listen to one of my favorite ornaments on our tree.
Thank goodness for my amazing husband who is putting up with my
{semi-crazy} final weeks of pregnancy hormones.
I love you boo!
I also love love love my dear friend Alison.
Here are the last 6 days of gifts I have received!
Day 7-
Snowflake ornament
 Day 8-
Cozy holiday Tea!!
 Day 9-
Cold and swollen feet.
She couldn't be more on!!
 Day 10-
She knows how much I love Christmas!!
Perfect for the back of our door.
 Day 11-
I was literally 'woo-hooing' when I opened this one!!
 She brought over:
Homemade cheese and meat raviolis.
Meatballs.
Sauce.
Loaf of Italian bread.
All homemade.
All absolutely delicious!!
She made Joe a Key Lime Pie too!
 And today,
Day 12-
Makeup!!!!
Such a pretty shade
"Iced Latte"
I think it will be perfect for that winter glow.
Thank you again Alison!!
You are just too sweet and I love it.
It's so fun opening a little gift every day.

I started some light baking...
Just some homemade chocolate chip cookies,
with holiday chips.
Randomly,
I have my last hair appointment today where I won't need a sitter!!
So crazy how you start thinking like that...
Hopefully this day continues to get better.
Have a happy Wednesday!
