February Freeze!

I know, I am as shocked as you are.  For real though, I've decided that I'm all about challenge, [I have my 24 day challenge coming up again soon!] and I feel so empowered when I take control of things.  So for this {haha short} month of February, I'm putting myself on a financial freeze.  What does that mean? Well, I am not too sure, I will figure it out as I go!

I have given us a budget for the month and I am excited to see how that works! I am really turning into quite a dork and I am ok with that!

My plan is to track and keep receipts of all purchases. I have a highly technologically advanced system:

An envelop, in which I will place all said receipts and if I make an online purchase, I'll just write down the date, the amount and the item bought.

I will also not be buying ANYTHING for fun.  No random boutique purchases.  No jewelry. No extras!  Just the necessities people!

Why?

I want to do this for a few reasons. One being, we looked our YTD and saw how much is in our bank account.  We did have a baby last year, but we really should and could be saving more money.  So I want to really see how much we are spending on things that we need, and really take a step back from buying things that we just want.

I think it's all too easy to step into Target for diapers and walk out with a cart full of stuff that is all fun, but really not needed.  This will also help me attain my yearly goal of not having so much darn clutter around these parts!

It has also been a very long and cold winter, and I think sometimes online shopping can happen a LITTLE too frequently.  So, while we are not in a financial crisis, we want to be smarter with our money.  I'm really starting to earn quite a bit with my AdvoCare business, so that is something new to me.  I have never been my own CEO and this whole money thing is intriguing to me!

I know a lot of people are looking into the Dave Ramsey stuff, and I looked briefly but to be honest, I am looking forward to just starting here with what I've got.

**Tip**

One thing that I noticed, is that when I can, I save a lot more money when I go grocery shopping without the baby.  It's tricky to watch her, hold/use my coupons and stick to my list.  She starts getting a little cranky and I start throwing stuff in my cart.  Not good.  So I am really making an effort to go to the store once a week and really stick to my list and use coupons (I get the Sunday paper delivered)

When meal planning, I'm starting by opening my cupboards, freezer and fridge to see what we have and then build my menu from there.

Anyone want to join me in my February Financial Freeze?!

Weekend Review & This Week's Meal Plan

Happy Monday!!
I hope you had a great weekend.
We sure did!
We kept it fairly low key since Joe's Crohn's acted up a little bit.
I made lots of pasta and we really relaxed a lot.
Friday:
Stopped by our friend's house & hung out for a bit...
I have become rather obsessed with Vlogs...
Especially pregnant women & couponing haha
Here are the Krazy Coupon Ladies
I also watched an odd movie Friday night while Joe slept...
Young Adult
It was stylistically interesting, but not a movie I'd recommend.
I'm glad that I didn't make my husband watch it.
Saturday:
I went to my pre-natal yoga class & boy am I still feeling it--in a good way!
I cleaned and organized...
I just love simple Saturday nights like that!
We had the windows open and played old school 90's rap
Sunday:
I don't know what I did to deserve it, but my sweet husband made me
breakfast in bed
I enjoyed watching Food Network and my delicious meal.
We ran two errands, and I came right back and put my pjs back on.
He went to his Fantasy Football draft and I caught up on RHONY
Fabulous.
Now for this week?
WE FIND OUT THE GENDER OF BABY BEAN TOMORROW!!
Boy or Girl?!?
And here are my 'menu' ideas for this week.
I make lunch/dinner pretty much every day, so I'm not sure the order, but
here's what's floating around in my head.
{recipes are linked to the name}
My Breads: {yes, I've been baking my own}
Have a great week!

Coupon Update: Useful Savings Tips

Yesterday I decided to try doing a little grocery shopping at Target.
We just got all fancified with the newly updated produce & freezer section at our local store.
I also love that it seems to a tad quieter than my local grocery store,
and the aisles are big enough where you never feel like you're really in the way.
I also tried out something new;
I brought my coupon binder with me into the store.
I usually try to make a list and figure it out ahead of time,
but then I don't exactly know which deals are best and if I don't have all my coupons,
I could be missing out on a crazy good deal!
So since it's just me and my bump, I threw my binder in the kid holder. :)
I still need to share how my coupons are organized, but really it's what works best for you.
I looked at when my coupons expired and I perused the aisles in search of decent deals.
I won't go purchase by purchase, but it did take a little time reading the fine print
and making sure I was getting the right amount of each product, and the correct coupon.
I stopped in the laundry soaps section.
Here's one example of how to be a smarter shopper:
Each thing of Downy was on sale for $8.00 a piece
On top of that, if you buy 2 at a time, you receive a $5 Target gift card to use next purchase.
I also had two $2.00 off of 2 coupons I clipped from the paper.
So all in all, I spent $18 on 4 when without any of these deals, I could have paid up to $36.
Not bad!
It does take time to think about what you are buying because I orginally was just going to get these guys,
which I absolutely love:
But they are $6.99 a piece, don't last as long, and there were no $5 gift card rewards.
So I decided it was want and not a need.
My overall spending was $92
and I saved almost $43
I didn't have a coupon for every item,
like the 3 bins I bought for storage, but they were on sale for $6.99
I'd like to think I'm getting better as I continue through this coupon journey!
How to Save at Target:
Get your local Sunday paper and read the ads
Clip coupons from Sunday paper for both Target & the brand names booklets
Check to see what you have to buy in order to get money back ie. Gift Cards
My other stop of the day was Bath and Body Works
We were running low on soap, and the husband really only likes foam soap.
I know it can be a treat to use B&BW, but I figured I'd check and see maybe they'd be having a soap sale.
Heck yea they are!
So right there, that's a great deal.
On top of that I a 20% off coupon from the mail
and a free mini to-go coupon
So now I have 7 new soaps with fall scents {yay!}
and a travel size shower gel I packed away in my bag I take on overnights.
Savings?
$27.50
I spent $17.28
Don't you just love that!!??
Don't get me wrong, it took every ounce of my being to not
purchase the Leaves candle for $19.95
But I know that I will get more coupons,
and there will be more sales,
and I will have that candle.
Couponing takes a TON of time.
However, it also saves quite a bit of money.
Just start small with a little organizer to carry in your purse.
Sign up for company emails, like facebook pages, local grocery store coupons.
They are every where if you just take a minute to do some research.
It also opens your eyes to newer products you didn't know you'd like.
A lot of companies give away freebies so you try it, like it, and buy more {with coupons!}
Be sure to have a safe place to keep coupons until you're ready to sort through them.
Whether it's a folder, a box, a shelf, whatever, just take some time while watching TV
to look through and see how you may be able to save a few dollars.
With baby on the way, I am becoming more mindful where are money is going.
I decided to start documenting/sharing simple tips that I am implementing.
Since going from two to three is going to cost a pretty penny,
I figured it's time to start being even smarter.
Ways We saved $$ this week:
  • Clipped coupons for a good hour Sunday morning
  • Went to a matinee instead of an evening movie
  • Used buy one get one free coupon for pretzels at the mall
  • Used my Discover card rewards ($20 turns into $25 gift card at Bed  Bath & Beyond)
  • Bed Bath & Beyond coupons NEVER expire--used two $5 off coupons and a $20 on all 3 items purchased
  • I filled out a rebate from Tire Rack when Joe had to get new tires, received a $75 gift card--used that on groceries and spent only $16 of our own money.
  • Paid my Kohls charge in person--saved a stamp, while out running errands.
  • Used coupons at Target, Wegmans, & Bath & Body works
  • Returned our bottles and cans and saved more on our grocery bill
  • Sold an old purse on e-bay
  • Sold a book on Amazon
  • Sold two books on instagram
  • Had leftovers for dinner one night
  • Got low lights in my hair--reduce the amount of salon visits per year
  • Stopped getting manicures every two weeks {Dear God, how was I spending that much a month!?}
  • Going through the cupboards/veggies to use up things that may go bad soon!
  • Make Iced Chai Lattes at  home: Total cost $8/8 lattes & extra milk for the week vs. $5/1 at the 'bux
  • Determined what I really needed vs wanted
Remember to have money, means to be smart with money.
It's so easy to just spend, but to really be aware how where it's going, can be eye opening.
I can also tell you in my quest for organizing and de-cluttering,
I don't need any more stuff.
Have a great Friday!!

Coupons: How do you Organize to Save?

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!!
This week's mission:
Work on my Couponing Skillzzz
Ya heard.
While it is a bit time consuming, I secretly get a thrill, at even saving $1.
And as hubs says, every dollar counts!!
I have a small coupon holder
which is now too full and a pain to find anything in!
So, I'm on a mission.
I have a very hard time spending the full amount on something when I can get a % off.
Example:
Michaels Custom Framing.
If I had not had my 70% off coupons, my framing bill would have been $438.
Seriously?
I feel bad for anyone who walks in and pays that full price!!
Where do I find my coupons?
  • I get the Sunday paper & swap coupons with a friend.
  • Magazines
  • Online
    • E-mails
    • Facebook
  • Smartphone Coupon Apps
    • JoAnns
    • Target
    • Michaels
  • Mobile alerts
  • Before going out to eat, shopping, or anything, checkout the company's website & see if there are any deals you can get before you go! Doesn't hurt to at least look.
  • If there are items that won't spoil, I will definitely stock up! (Soaps, toilet paper, paper towel)
  • I am trying to get better at 'shopping around' at different places,
      • Target, Wegmans, Walgreens, Tops, CVS, & BJ's for better deals
I have found Walgreens to be an excellent place to score deals!
It's also very convenient, as there are no long lines and you don't feel bad taking time with all your coupons!
In February I went to Walgreens and bought this:
Now, I still have body wash (it's now June!)
The Vitamins were Buy one get one Free
& another $2 off coupon printed at checkout,
so I went back and bought another!
Still using those!
I have had to replenish dog treats & cascade.
Here's my receipt:
So I spent $55.30 and saved $32.99
My bill was not $88.29!!!!
How great is that?
Aaaaaaand, I didn't buy anything we didn't need!!
So, I'm ready to upgrade my organization.
I will definitely update when I figure out what binder/organization method I ended up with.
For now, I leave you with some of my Monday morning researching.
Here's a fab blog that's up to date and has lots of great links for printing:
I watched the following Vlog
